Weather the Winter with These 10 Safe Driving Tips

Let the early November storms be a warning. Act now to be prepared for whatever Old Man Winter sends your way with these winter car care tips and safe driving tips for icy, snowy, wet and foggy weather.

  • Make sure your car insurance is up to date. You may want to consider Collision and Comprehensive to cover the costs of winter fender benders and storm damage. Review your coverage and compare car insurance policies online.
  • Winterize your car. Have your mechanic test your battery, check exhaust system, hoses, brakes, belts and wiper blades, and replace worn parts. Inspect your tires including the spare. Check antifreeze levels.
  • Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies including blankets, water, non-perishable food, flares, flashlight and emergency hand-cranked radio that can double as a cell phone charger.
  • Keep your gas tank filled. When the power goes out, gas pumps don’t work.
  • Keep tire pressure at the level recommended in your vehicle manual.
  • Before you head out, check under the hood. Cats and other small critters often climb into engine wells seeking warmth. Some of them , like rats and raccoons, like to chew on insulation and wiring.
  • Never pour hot water on an iced-up windshield or window. It will weaken or crack the glass. Give yourself enough time to let the defroster do its thing.
  • Never sit in an idling car inside a closed garage. The build-up of carbon monoxide can quickly kill you. Even outdoors, it’s a good idea to crack the window a bit.
  • Use your low beams in low-visibility driving situations like fog. High beams will just reflect back at you, impairing visibility.
  • If you don’t have snow tires, carry a set of chains in your trunk.
  • Before you head out on a long trip, let someone know where you’re going and when to expect you.
